“CRITICAL MASS – Planning Engages the World” is the title for the Planning Institute of Australia’s 2011 National Congress, which will take place in Hobart, 6–9 March 2011.

The congress will focus on how planners engage with the world and how the world perceives planning. The title symbolizes some serious soul searching for the profession, as well as the need to create effective partnerships to make the changes needed.

Sub-themes of the congress are “thinking planning” (present by commentators on the planning industry), “working planning” (presented by members of the industry) and Living Planning (presented by end users served by the industry).

Other highlights of the event are the National Awards for Planning Excellence presentations and YP Connect – a platform where young planners across Australia can share their passion for planning better places and develop solutions to the challenges that we all face. Melinda Dodson, immediate past national president of the Australian Institute of Architects, will be a keynote speaker.
