DX Architects’ new Carlton residence

The Carlton house by DX Architects.

EARLIER THIS year, Melbourne based DX Architects completed the renovation of what could be Carlton’s oldest building.

Due to the age of the original house, the challenge was to work within the confines of the heritage exterior while creating a modern interior to suit the client’s lifestyle. A key issue was that limited natural light made the interior spaces very dark and damp.

The new design allows much more natural light into the building. Cleverly placed high windows and skylights allow more light in without taking away from the heritage facade. Particular care was taken with the northern facade where the windows are larger.

The interior space is opened up by the removal of internal walls and the addition of a room in the existing roof space. This has left the existing rafters exposed to celebrate the history of the structure.

As well as modernizing the building, DX Architects also enhanced its heritage. Non-original decorative details are removed and the outside is rendered in the original style.
