Pascal Zegers from Linteloo visits ECC

DUTCH FURNITURE company Linteloo's Commercial Director Pascal Zegers recently touched down in New Zealand to visit ECC – the company's New Zealand stockist. An enigmatic and excited Zegers took me through the Linteloo range which now has a dedicated display area at ECC.

The stand out Linteloo piece from the Milan Furniture Fair this year was Jan's New Sofa designed by Paola Navone. The high-backed sofa which embraces a 'shabby chic' aesthetic with loose linen covers over the base, and layers of feather-filled cushions instead of taut upholstery has also taken pride of place in the ECC showroom. The system is modular and so can be customised to a multitude of arrangements to fit all types of situations. The gigantic long couches at ECC, covered in the acid green and purple covers that defined the colour trends from Milan, does make a dramatic statement.

Linteloo's company mantra is The Feel Good Factor – and feel good is what this couch does best. Sitting back into the next of pillows, it takes some effort just to think about a good reason to bother getting up again. The soft and natural linen has a welcome tactile feel, and as Zegers enthused, the loose cover instead of upholstery allows you to have two or more different covers and change the look of the couch to suit the change in season, or your change in mood.

The Linteloo range also includes a solid collection of beautifully crafted chairs, sofas, and tables in leather and timber, which offer more sedate, but no less design-led options.

Design found off the beaten track

LAST WEEK I made the trek out to Clevedon, a rural community in south-east Auckland. I wasn’t there to look at the sheep, or even visit their terrific farmer’s market, I went to visit Workroom, a small design store along Clevedon’s main street.

Workroom is a father-daughter partnership between Rebecca Snelling and Douglas Snelling. Douglas is the implementer of Rebecca’s design concepts and together have a strong aesthetic as well as sensibility for materials. Douglas’ background is in farming he progressed into building houses as well as other practical projects while Rebecca has a fine arts training. An art background with a skillful woodworking combine into pieces with clean compositions, and a focus on materiality.

Workroom design uses found material where ever possible and only sustainably farmed timbers. The pieces and hand produced in low quantities.

Workroom also stocks quirky and beautiful pieces froma  range of small-scale designers and artists.

Definitely well worth a look around if you do get out to Clevedon, perhaps on a Sunday morning to coincide with the Farmers Market.

Coke with that?

111-Navy-6-Colors

AROUND THESE parts we tend to admire the styling of Emeco’s Navy Chair and interestingly Emeco recently teamed up with Coke to create a variant of the chair made out of 111 recycled plastic bottles (from the company’s South Carolina recycling plant). The chair is made out of rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate – recycled plastic bottles), and Emeco developed the proprietary formula with scientists from BASF. The chair’s design includes the original stretcher (structural brace) below the seat, a detail that creates great structural integrity.
Replicating the chair required an advanced molding technique. A gas assist process adds internal structure to the chair while minimising the amount of material required. The chair body is manufactured upside down in a special core island while a robotic function inserts the stretcher into place while the chair is hot.

Tototo chair at Opera Kitchen

Tototo at Opera Kitchen.

TOTOTO CHAIRS, with their odd assortment of bright colours, add a sense of fun to Hastings cafe Opera Kitchen kitchen, which recently featured on prodesign.co.nz . Other design features of the space include a custom made David Trubridge light. Remnants from the production process were used in the manufacture of the bar – the shapes were cut into MDF and then lacquered.

The Tototo chair is a fun, stackable, outdoor chair suitable for cafe, restaurant and residential exteriors. Designed by Hannes Wettstein, Tototo has a strong presence with an streamlined monobloc design and  colour palette of eight colours. It can be vertically stacked for maximum storage.
