FROCKS WON'T be the only design pieces on show at upcoming New Zealand Fashion Week. Urbis has been invited to design the interior of the VIP room, which means that we'll be choosing some of the most elegant and interesting pieces of furniture to tempt frazzled fashionistas to take a seat. The stilletos will probably help our cause.
Working with Studio Italia, Urbis will be crafting a unique and intimate lounge area for media and fashion stars. The room, co-hosted by GHD and MAC cosmetics, will have hair stylists and makeup artists working throughout the day to gives guests touch ups and a moment of pampering before racing out to another show.
While this all sounds a bit frothy, the Urbis team will be interviewing designers and taking a close look at intricacies of cut and form in our ongoing interest in the craft and design of fashion, more than transitory trends. All the Fashion Week coverage will be in the December issue of Urbis.

AS THE country gears up for New Zealand Fashion Week in September, fashion designers are busy not just readying their collections for the shows. Some have also been collaborating with HP to design a limited edition skin that will be available for Mini and 17 inch HP notebooks from mid-September until stocks run out.
The fashion and technology collaboration was launched at The Grove restaurant in Auckland today with a crowd of stylish fashion writers and commentators, and me (the only one with the hand-scribbled placecard – who forgot to rsvp on time...?) Urbis has worked with HP during Urbis Designday 2010, so it was exciting to see a further push by the company to engage with the design industry. HP have previously released two Vivian Tam Minis, using a design by New York fashion designer Vivian Tam, showing their continued dedication to fashion - and making gadgets a fashion accessory. For this New Zealand collaboration, the result is four stunning graphic images by some of New Zealand's leading fashion designers.
Adrian Hailwood, Saben, Sable & Minx and Annah Stretton each designed a skin that reflected their Spring/Summer 2011 ranges.the designs are all unique as each designer, from Hailwood's luxurious and mysterious vision of a woman to Saben's graphic tessellated colour blocks. Those who buy a selected HP notebook from mid-September will be able to choose the skin design they like to make their notebook a unique fashion piece.
Check out all the designs at HP.

AUSTRALIAN FASHION designer Akira Isogawa, along with Urbis editor, Nicole Stock, and Designer Rugs senior designer, Lia Pielli, talked to a group of rug designer hopefuls on Tuesday night. The workshop, part of the Evolve awards, which Designer Rugs is running across both New Zealand and Australia, invites architects and interior designers to submit a unique rug design. Six selected rugs will join the Designer Rugs ID Collection, and the winner designers will be in the running for more than $20,000 in prizes – including a trip to Milan Salone de Mobile 2011.
Akira talked candidly about how his own inspirations, and how he translated motifs from his fashion range into rug designs. While Nicole gave a preview of the next issue of Urbis, out 31 May reporting on the trends and products at the recent Milan Furniture Fair. Lia gave an insight into the technical handcrafted tufting process of the rug production, which should help hopefuls design a rug that is easily translated into a floor rug. Her recommendations included: staying away from light colours; sticking to easily blocked colours – not trying to replicate a painterly style; and keeping to only about six colours.
Entries into the Evolve Awards close on 30 June. The competition is open to all interior design professionals. Visit Designer Rugs for more information.
